WhatsApp Lock: Protect WhatsApp with a password

If you sometimes hand over your phone to someone else, or have it lying around unlocked, then it is possible that a third party can read your messages and chat history on the phone. That’s true for regular SMS but also for apps like WhatsApp if you have installed it on the phone as well.

Since there is no protection in the app itself, the only thing to do to protect the messages from being accessed by someone else is to make sure that your phone is locked at all times when you are not near it.

This still does not resolve situations where someone asks you for your phone though. This does not need to be your wife, husband, girlfriend or boyfriend, it can also be that you have to hand it over on an airport or to your teacher while in school.

WhatsApp Lock adds a basic form of protection to the popular messaging client. Basic? While you can use it to password protect the WhatsApp application with a four digit pin so that no one can access it without entering the pin first, it fails to protect itself from being uninstalled on the system.

En smartphones con cámara frontal es posible tomar foto cuando alguien intenta introducir el PIN de manera incorrecta.

Con el objetivo de que el 66% de la población mundial que aún no tiene un buen acceso a Internet pueda disfrutar de una conexión decente, Google X (el departamento de Google responsable por las gafas Glass y los coches que conducen solos) ha presentado el Proyecto Loon, una idea en la que los desafíos físicos pueden superarse gracias a los globos.

Creemos que debería ser posible construir un anillo de globos capaz de volar alrededor del mundo con los vientos estratosféricos, y a través de los cuales proporcionar acceso a Internet a la Tierra.

Aún están comenzando. El proyecto, en su etapa inicial, ya ha conseguido demostrar su funcionamiento a altitudes dos veces superiores a la de aviones comerciales, emitiendo señales de Internet a la tierra y permitiendo conexiones semejantes a las conseguidas con 3G.

Speed up Google Chrome’s start with BarTab-like FooTab extension

One feature that I have come to like a lot in the Firefox web browser lately is the delayed tab loading that Mozilla implemented some time ago in the browser (based on the Bar Tab extension). What this does basically is block the loading of open tabs during start until they are selected by the user (you find “Don’t load tabs until selected” under tabs in the Firefox options).

Google Chrome does not ship with this feature and I recently noticed that the browser was causing slow downs on the system due to the number of tabs it had to restore. The tabs that I had open in the browser at the same time grew in the last weeks to about 50 and that seemed to be the main cause for the slow start that I was experiencing.

The loading can impact the whole system at the time. Up until now though there was not really anything that you could do about it since there was no extension or option to change the behavior.

So what can you do to stop Google Chrome from loading all tabs on startup?

The FooTab extension has been created to improve Chrome’s start up time. It prevents all tabs but the active one from being loaded when the browser starts, so that the start itself is faster and not as taxing to the system.

FooTab Speeds Up Chrome’s Start Time By Only Loading One Tab

If you’ve ever quit Chrome with a few dozen tabs open, you know the pain that ensues the next time you open it. Instead of watching your browser churn to reload all of those tabs, load them on demand with FooTab.

The FooTab extension isn’t currently available on the Chrome Web Store, but you can install it by hand by downloading the .crx file from SourceForge and dragging it onto your extensions list in Chrome’s settings. Once installed, FooTab will prevent all but your currently-selected tab from loading in the background for ten seconds after launching , allowing Chrome to focus its resources on starting up and loading your primary tab. After ten seconds, tabs will start downloading data in the background, but if you switch to one before it’s done, it will load up immediately.

The idea is similar to The Great Suspender, but its focus is specifically on startup performance, so FooTab might be a better option if you don’t want tabs suspending in the background while you’re still using Chrome.

Chrome’s tabs are legendary – or should I say infamous? If you’ve found yourself staring at a blank screen for minutes on end while the browser struggled and spluttered to reopen yesterday’s fifty-tab session, you know what I’m talking about. The problem lies in that Chrome tries to reopen all the tabs at once, hogging the computer’s physical resources, and then crashing. On Firefox, the issue was resolved this eons ago with the powerful BarTab that prevents new tabs from loading until you actually click them, and the add-on’s code was later added to the browser itself to bring the feature to it natively. FooTab can be considered it’s protégé, though admittedly less powerful and a bit unstable, depending on your OS, browser version and computer speed. But it’s definitely worth a shot; for a full ten seconds, the add-on prevents inactive tabs from sending web requests and only restores web traffic to them when you want to visit them. To activate a blocked tab, simply click it.

TumblOne es un pequeño programa gratuito para Windows (desde Vista en adelante) que nos permite descargarnos todas las imágenes publicadas en cualquier blog de Tumblr y que no necesita de instalación. A pesar de que es muy fácil de usar, dentro del archivo comprimido en el que viene, tenemos una pequeña guía acerca de como manejarlo. De todas formas, echémosle un vistazo.

Tan sólo tenemos que introducir en el campo superior la URL del blog del que queremos descargar las imágenes, pulsar en “Add blog” y, por último, pulsar en “Crawl” para empezar a descargar. En la parte inferior tenemos una opción para evitar bajarnos archivos GIF, pues estos suelen pesar bastante, y allí mismo será donde podremos observar el progreso de la descarga.

Algo muy útil es que podemos pausar o incluso detener la descarga en cualquier momento. Aunque cerremos el programa, luego la podremos reanudar donde lo habíamos dejado, sin que se vuelvan a bajar las imágenes que descargamos anteriormente. Las imágenes se guardan dentro de la carpeta donde hayamos colocado el ejecutable, con una subcarpeta para el contenido de cada blog.

Google Reader will be terminated in just a couple of weeks and if you have not yet looked around for a suitable alternative, you may want to start doing so.

InoReader is a web-based RSS reader that offers the most important characteristics that I’m interested in: speed, ease of use and an option to only display titles by default for faster browsing. It has a couple of shortcomings as well, like missing sync, but more about that later.

First thing you may want to do after setting up an account (Facebook, Google or direct registration available) is add RSS feeds to it. You can either add feeds manually or import an OPML file which most feed readers support.

The import should not take too long after which all feeds of the file are added to the reader. Your folder structure is carried over as well so that you do not have to resort feeds based on that. The import does not add tags or labels yet but at least support for importing tags is planned for a future version of the application.

Y no es para menos, ya que su uso nos hace olvidar completamente de Google Reader, ya que nos permite disponer tanto del modo de vista compacto como el modo de vista expandido, además de disponer de estadísticas, y de la posibilidad de importación de suscripciones por diferentes vías, y de poder exportarlas en el momento que queramos, algo que muchos otros servicios no tienen incorporado. Además, cada publicación cuenta al final del mismo con una serie de botones que nos permiten desde marcarlo como favorito, hasta comentarlo y compartirlo por diferentes vías, tanto a través del correo electrónico como a través de las redes sociales, disponiendo de múltiples redes a elegir.

Si no fuera suficiente, también cuenta con la posibilidad de integrar nuestras cuentas de Pocket e Instapaper, y también dispone de una serie de extras, como un bookmarklet y una extensión para Chrome.

Skillfeed is the latest site to capitalize on the white-hot learn-to-code trend.

This new contestant hails from the bowels of stock photography site Shutterstock, an online behemoth with a $1.5 billion market cap.

Skillfeed’s curriculum covers such topics as CSS and MySQL. It also has some basic design and computer literacy coursework on topics like Excel and Photoshop.

Like Shutterstock itself, which serves as a marketplace for freelance photographers and illustrators to vend their wares to end customers, Skillfeed will be a middle man-type service to facilitate interactions between instructor/experts and students.

As of this writing, Skillfeed has around 10,000 instructional videos from 100 instructors. Videos include long-form coursework as well as “skill snacks,” short clips containing tips and techniques you can pick up in five minutes or so.

Compact Featured

The VidiU is a small device measuring just 3 inches by 4 inches by 1 inch at 5 oz. It easily fits on top of any camera via the included hot-shoe mount.

A pesar de que cada vez hay más y más soluciones para todo en Internet, hay una que no acaba de estar resuelta del todo: la transferencia de archivos. Hace unas semanas pudimos hablar con Simon Hosell, que nos presentó una solución a este problema usando Facebook y P2P: Pipe.

Pipe no podría ser más sencillo. Es una aplicación de Facebook en la que eliges a un amigo, arrastras un archivo a la tubería y se le envía directamente. El amigo recibirá una notificación para que se conecte a Pipe y pueda recibir el archivo. Si no está online, se quedará guardado en el locker o armario, un espacio de almacenamiento temporal que almacena archivos de hasta 100 MB.

Si el envío es directo (tu amigo está conectado), el archivo se transfiere directamente entre los dos ordenadores sin servidores intermedios. Funciona todo lo rápido que vaya tu red, de forma privada y segura. Además, al no almacenar nada, no se enfrentan a problemas con las entidades de copyright.

El único problema es que el límite para enviar archivos es de 1GB, lo que nos limita un poco. También el hecho de estar en Facebook nos limita un poco a la hora de enviar archivos a personas que no tengamos agregadas. Para Pipe sin embargo es mejor estar sólo en Facebook, para ser un servicio entre personas y no para compartir archivos.

The new Gmail is here, very slowly rolling out thanks to staged rollouts that may take a few weeks to complete. Thankfully, we already have the APK, and it’s only a quick download away. The version number is 4.5-694836, and it’s beautiful. Gogogo grab it!

Update: If you don’t see the categories, go to the desktop version of Gmail, click the gear icon on the top right, and select Configure Inbox.

Update #2: Swipe down to refresh (see 4th screenshot)!

Update #3: You can finally empty the trash with one tap (see 6th screenshot). Hallelujah!

Ya puedes descargar la nueva versión de Gmail para Android

La semana pasada el equipo de Gmail presentó su nueva bandeja de entrada con sus nuevas categorías de Recibidos para tener más organizado nuestro correo. Hasta ahora esta nueva bandeja solo estaba disponible en la versión web pero desde hoy ya la podemos disfrutar en nuestros dispositivos Android.

Parece que Google ya ha comenzado a actualizar Gmail para Android en Google Play a la nueva versión 4.5, al parecer de forma escalonada para ofrecer a todo el mundo la actualización durante los próximos días. Por suerte ya se ha filtrado al APK para que podamos instalar manualmente la actualización.
